DARIN SCHULTZ was a long time tennis player with a huge heart,
not only to friends and family, but to his community as well. He was on the
board of The Harry Chapin Food Bank for many years, as well as The Red Cross.
While on the board of the Food Bank, Darin began to develop an idea for
an event that could benefit his charity. Combining this with his
passion for tennis, Darin created The New Year's Doubles Challenge.
At the time, he was a resident of Vivante. He teamed up with the tennis
professional at the time for Vivante, Jak Beardsworth. With Darin working
out the specifics of the tournament, and sponsorships, and Jak organizing
the drafts and court schedule, this great event was born. On January 9th, 10th and
11th of 2009, the 1st annual New Year's Doubles Challenge took place!
Over the course of the next five years, Darin tweaked and updated the details
of the tournament, continuing to make the tournament more successful
every year. He would continue to obtain more sponsorships and players,
while Jak would keep the tournament running smoothly, even through Darin's
never-ending critiques, and well beyond last minute entries.
Darin passed away in the spring of 2013. We chose to keep his dream alive,
but with one more tweak to the incredible event he had made, the name.
We renamed the event, Darin Schultz's New Year's Doubles Challenge.
